Correspondence, reports, notes, bibliographies, computer printouts, newsletters, publications, and other reference material largely relating to the Office of Naval Research's computing surveys. Among the reports are "Comparison of RCA's BIZMAC Computer to IBM's 702" (1954), "Proposed Programming for the EDVAC" by Samuel Lubkin (1947), a report on the Zurich Conference on Algorithmic Language (1958), a Naval Research Laboratory meeting on storage tubes (1946), "Reaction to the Initial Use of COBOL" by M. H. Schwartz, and several reports on computing in Europe. Also includes sample printouts from the Remington Rand High-Speed printer.

The original "Survey of large-scale computers and computer projects" was published by the Office of Naval Research in 1947 and 1948. It was revised and updated in 1950 under the title, HIGH-SPEED COMPUTING DEVICES (New York: McGraw-Hill, 1950). In 1948 Smith joined the Office of Naval Research as a mathematician, and later became head of the Computer Systems and Applications Branch of Naval Ship Systems Command. He edited the Digital Computer Newsletter form 1949 until 1954, and served on the Conference on Data Systems Languages executive committee from 1959 to 1960.
